MENTA Enterpreneur Goes Global

Riki Baker (MendMyi) and Stephen Fry

Stephen Fry Comes Along for the Ride

Suffolk based MendMyi are an iPhone, iPad and iPod specialist. Not only do the team service and repair all things i, they have taken the iPhone 4 market by storm as they deliver the kind of service technology lovers have been craving.

The MendMyi trend that is currently exciting the iMarket is their unique ColourLab service. Customers can choose from a range of colours and designs to personalise and customise their iPhone to exact specifications.
Clients include Gadget Show presenters Pollyanna Woodwood and Jason Bradbury, and tech king Stephen Fry. Indeed since tweeting his delight at his Norwich City ColourLab iPhone to his 4.4 million followers, in no less than 10 hours MendMyi had an extra 5000 global individuals visiting the website, with new orders being placed around the Globe.

MendMyi is the only company in the World to offer the ColourLab service for iPhones and are soon due to extend the service to iPads.

MendMyi was formally established just eight months ago by fulltime Industrial Engineer and part-time iPhone repairman Riki Baker. He said, “I had been fixing iPhones in my spare time for the last three years before setting up this business. I remember vividly the day I had worked 14 hours on a transformer in Cromer and then drove home and worked on three phones. I realised I had just made more money in those last two hours than I had all day in Cromer. Obviously that made me think.”

Initially with the help of his girlfriend dispatching parts through his Ebay sales and eventually taking on staff and getting a premises from MENTA – the Suffolk Enterprise Agency, Riki has remained focused on creating the business he wanted and knows it can be.

Alex Till, CEO of MENTA says, “Riki is an entrepreneurial inspiration. He is focused, driven and remarkably hard working. He knows what he wants to achieve and is prepared to put the effort and energy in to achieving his goals. He has had one of our workspace units in Haverhill for just a few months and already he is upgrading to two larger spaces.”

Certainly Riki says that with this success, luck hasn’t really come in to it. “If you want something to happen, you have to put things in place to make it happen. I don’t believe in luck. Good fortune comes to those who work hard.”

An example of that focus and determination came back in February when he took matters in to his own hands and approached Gadget Show Live to attend as an exhibitor. No supplier or associate provider had ever approached the organisers before to attend alongside Global giants such as Apple, Microsoft, and Xbox. Happily the organisers agreed, the Show was a big success for MendMyi and from there the business has expanded and built a loyal following.

“Customising Stephen Fry’s iPhone has of course been a big coup for the business,” Riki adds, but now he has his sights firmly placed on America. “We have already looked at the market over in the States and we want to do things very differently. Our aim is to stand out and at the same time offer a client service that no one else is offering.”

When asked to reflect on these past eight months Riki concludes “Setting up MendMyi was a risk, but I am pleased I did it. We are expanding, employing more people and I think we can really make a big impact on an exciting Global market.”
